The basic definitions of the view levels themselves (ie the field of view of each level) and a few items of data directly associated with each level are "global" to the whole of SkyMap and apply to all maps. You will probably want to adjust the level definitions to suit your requirements once, and then never touch them again once they are "right" for you. Any changes made to the basic view level definitions are automatically saved between runs of the program.

The view levels are numbered from 1 to 10, with 1 corresponding to the widest field and view, and 10 corresponding to the narrowest field of view. To view or change the settings for a view level, click the "tabs" labelled 1-10 at the top of the dialog; view level 3 is selected in the picture shown above.

视场等级从1到10编号,1对应最宽广的天区,10则对应最小的视场。要查看或者改变视场等级,点击对话框顶部标有1-10数字的列表框;下面的图中选择的是第3等级。

Field of view

The view level is defined by its field of view, which is entered in degrees and minutes. The fields of view must be in descending order as the view level increases - level 3 must have a smaller field of view than level 2; level 4 must have a smaller field of view than level 3, and so on.

视场等级是根据它所对应的观察范围定义的,观察范围以度、分定义。观察的视场范围是按视场等级的降序排列的——3级视场肯定要比2级视场小,4级视场又会比3级视场小,以此类推。

Star display data

Each field of view has star display data associated with it. There are two items which can be set:

  • The "limiting magnitude" of stars on the map, ie the magnitude of the faintest star which will be displayed. As the view level increases, you will normally want to show fainter stars. In the illustration above, the limiting magnitude has been set to 8.
  • The magnitude associated with the largest available star symbol. All stars brighter than this value will be shown on the map using the largest star symbol. Since the screen (or printer) can only display a relatively small number of different sizes of star symbols, this facility is very useful when showing a map with faint stars, since it allows you to use the range of symbol sizes to distinguish the faint stars from one another. In the illustration, the largest star symbol will be used for stars of magnitude 3 and brighter, so the entire range of star symbol will be used between magnitude 8 and magnitude 3.
  • 星图中的极限星等,即所显示的最暗星等。在视场等级增加时,通常会显示更暗的星。在下面的图例中,极限星等是8——最大可能视场等级的默认星等。

Deep sky object display data

Each field of view has deep sky object display data associated with it. There are two items which can be set:

  • The "limiting magnitude" of deep sky objects on the map, ie the magnitude of the faintest deep sky object which will be displayed. As the view level increases, you will normally want to show fainter deep sky objects. In the illustration above, the limiting magnitude has been set to 9. If a value of zero is specified, no magnitude limit will be imposed.
  • “极限星等”:比如说要显示的最暗的深空天体。在视场等级增加时,你通常希望看到更黯淡的深空天体。在上面的图例中极限星等是9等。如果设定值为0则没有星等限制。
  • The "size limit" for deep sky objects. Only objects greater than this size will be visible on the map. If a value of zero is specified, no size limit will be imposed (as is the case in the illustration).
